He graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Theology in 1974 and Istanbul University Faculty of Law in 1976. He completed his doctorate in the Chair of Islamic Law at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences 1981. He attained the title of Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor in 1991.
In 1977, he joined the (stanbul Higher Institute of Islam, as it was then named, as an assistant. From that date until his retirement in 2010, he served as a faculty member at the Marmara University Faculty of Theology and also served as the Dean of the same faculty between 1994 and 1997.
He served as a visiting professor at the Universities of Cezayir, Emir Abdülkadir, Annabe, Malezya Uluslararası İslam International Islamic University Malaysia, and Frankfurt Goethe Universität (Frankfurt Goethe University).
He was a member of the fıkıh (Islamic jurisprudence) scholarly board for the TDV İslam Ansiklopedisi (TDV Encyclopedia of Islam) and chaired this board for a period. He also served as a member of the İSAM Management Board. Since 2010, he has been serving as the founding rector of our university.
